Technologies like Javascript, Shockwave, RealVideo/Audio, Flash, etc. have been adopted into English education to make learning more interactive and authentic. The following are sample web sites of English e-learning organized according to different domains of learning.

Listening

  • Randall’s ESL Cyber Listening – Close to 100 listening activities organized by length (short/long) or topic (general/academic). Students listen to a sound file(with or without caption) and then answer questions about the dialogue they've heard.
  • Arlyn Freed's ESL/EFL Listening Resources - Includes reviews of the web sites listed, noting the forms of technology used, pros and cons about the site/material, and suggestions for listening.
  • Listening Practices – Listening practices for learners of different proficiency levels with accent listening gallery and listening lesson plans.
  • English Listening Room – Listen to songs and fill in the blank.

Reading

  • Interactive Reading Material – A sample interactive branching story in which readers can make their own choices about what will happen next. Quizzes are embedded in the reading process.
  • Reading Skills and Resources – Training of different kinds of reading skills and resources for online reading materials, as well as a few reading quizzes.

Writing

  • Writing Guidelines – Online resources of guidelines on different genres of writing (tips, sample writings, etc.).
  • Paragraph Punch – An educational software that guide learners step by step through the whole process of writing a passage.
  • Writing Den – Writing tips and quizzes at word, sentence, and paragraph levels to help learners to improve their writing skills.

Pronunciation

  • English Pronunciation – Demo pronunciation lessons with instructions and QuickTime movie on how to pronounce individual sound, and activities such as tongue twisters, mini pair distinction and dictation.
  • Sounds of English – Online resources on the pronunciation of pairs of sounds in text, audio and graphic formats.
  • BBC Education – Varieties of games with animation and audio on the basic phonics such as consonant cluster, CVC words and long vowels.
  • English Vowels and Consonants – A site with instructions, graphics and video clips on the pronunciation of individual vowels and consonants, as well as word examples in audio format. It also allows learners to record their own pronunciation.
  • American Accent – A comprehensive explanation on the sounds of American English, though text only.
  • Pronunciation Web Resources – A useful list of web resources categorized by the technologies used (e.g. sites using shockwave, sites using QuickTime), and other useful references.

Vocabulary

  • Vocabulary Puzzles – Online resource for working on groups of related vocabulary words in a puzzle format. It consists of interactive vocabulary puzzles for different levels (e.g., elementary, high school) and in different forms (e.g. definition matching, fill-in-the-blanks, word find) and with different thematic features (e.g. holidays, sports, current events).
  • Vocabulary Quizzes – Vocabulary quizzes arranged by categories of difficult levels (level 1-level 5) and in different forms (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank).
  • Popular Vocabulary Activities – A collection of 13 kinds of flash card, concentration and other Java-enabled vocabulary/phrase learning activities with samples for each kind including ability to create your own.
  • Vocabulary Builder – A site to build business, telephone and other useful vocabularies and expressions through doing the quizzes.
  • SuperKids Vocabulary Builder – An entertaining way to build learners’ vocabulary and spelling through providing word explanation and hand-on activities such as hangman. Learners can also make their own word scrambler, hidden word puzzles.
  • Classified Vocabulary – Useful vocabularies arranged in different categories (e.g. restaurant vocabulary, Internet vocabulary). Words in each category are given definitions and then are used in conversations.

Grammar

  • Grammar Guide – Comprehensive online resource for grammar usage with explanations and examples.
  • Internet Grammar of English – Online resources on word classes and structural rules of English with explanations and examples. Each section provides a list of exercises after explanation.
  • Grammar Reference – An extensive site that contains grammar references at different levels (e.g. word & sentence level, paragraph level) as well as a collection of interactive grammar quizzes.
  • Grammar Quizzes – A collection of grammar quizzes organized according to level of difficulty. Quizzes are in the form of multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank.
